KARYES
Karyes is a monk settlement founded by Saint Aton. It gained its status following the monastic reorganization of Mt. Athos in the 9th century. The word "KARYES" means walnut, which are plentiful in the surrounding of this small monk settlement. It is situated an the core of Athos peninsula, on the northeast slopes of Mount Athos. Athon is basically a monk republic, with every monastery having its typicon and rules. The Church of Protaton is situated in Karyes, as well as the Mt. Athos administrative seat and residences (konaki).Protaton is consisted of the monastic community (the so-called Kinotis) and Epistasia (the Holy Council elected by the monastic community). The monasteries' representatives (one representative per monastery) constitute the monastic administrative body. Epistasia, functioning as the executive body, is formed every year by one representative of the five main monasteries. Karyes includes the residences of all Athonite monasteries, besides Koutloumousiou which is situated in Karyes. Karyes has a telegraph, customs and post office, police station, shops and an ambulance. The Karyes's catholicon dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos or Protaton is the oldest on Mt. Athos and was supposedly founded in the 4th century. The temple was afflicted with fire on multiple occasions and was finally reconstructed in the 10th century. It was demolished by the catholics in the 12th century and reconstructed by Bulgarians afterwards. It preserves 13th century frescoes. The upper portion of the altar preserves the treasures of Karyes and the entire Mt. Athos -
the wonder-working icon of Our Lady named Axion Estin. The icon protects the entire Athonite community. Moreover, the temple holds a wonder-working Jesus Christ icon. Another wonder-working Our Lady (Mlekopitateljnica) icon is stored in St. Sava's cell.
“Достојно јест, јако во ваистину блажити Тја Богородицу.
Присноблаженују и Пренепорочнују и Матер Бога нашего.
Честњејшују Херувим и славњејшују без сравњенија Серафим.
Без истљенија Бога Слова рождшују, сушчују Богородицу,
Тја величајем.”
